Your Brain Knows When It's Time to Take a Breath

Cycles of inhalation and exhalation are timed to enhance sensory perception.

It's something we often don't pay much attention to. It's also something that is coordinated very carefully with a lot of what we do. Breathing is truly a basic function of life. But how we breathe can have dramatic effects on brain function and emotional regulation. But can how we breathe actually alter perception?

Don't Hold Your Breath

When we do motor actions, our breathing changes. The most common example we have all done is probably how we do a brief breath hold when we pick up something heavy. This is known as the Valsalva maneuver and it helps us stabilize our central body core. But how do changes in the timing of breathing patterns affect sensation?

This is something that was of interest to researchers Francesca della Penna, Andrea Zaccaro, Başak Bayram, Francesco Bubbico, Mauro Gianni Perrucci, Marcello Costantini and Francesca Ferri from the University of Chieti-Pescara in Italy. They point out that we continuously and automatically modulate our breathing to align in time with inputs outside the body ("exteroceptive"). This "active sensing" is correlated with enhanced and faster perceptual accuracy. Does this also extend to the sensation of body signals and states ("interoceptive") like heart rate?

The Right Time to Take a Breather

Della Penna and colleagues studied modulation of respiration in 41 healthy participants (25 women and 16 men) in their mid-twenties during a heartbeat discrimination interoceptive task and a tactile sensory detection exteroceptive task. They analyzed respiration (inhalation/exhalation timing) relative to heart rate and touch stimuli to look for coherence.

These researchers found that the amplitude and phase timing of breathing in study participants were synchronized with stimulus onset in both tasks. They also showed that performance in both tasks was "enhanced during exhalation compared with inhalation, suggesting that respiratory modulation supports the perception of both interoceptive and exteroceptive signals".

These results add to a growing literature showing that during exhalation, sensory responsiveness is generally enhanced in auditory startle and conditioned learning. Specific phases of the breathing cycle thus widely facilitate the perception of sensory signals.

Making Sense of Sanchin

I found this study to be fascinating because of the links to mindfulness, meditation, and martial arts. All these practices place significant attention on breathing to change or anchor mood and mind and to enhance performance. This kind of research focuses on how breathing can allow for enhanced perception, yet bidirectionality is a common feature within most physiological systems. This suggests to me that practices focusing on breath to enhance perception of inner and exterior conditions may then utilize that perception to further regulate respiration in a mutually reinforcing manner.

The fact that the expiration enhanced sensory detection and perception is particularly interesting to me as a martial artist. Many martial arts traditions focus on breathing patterns as part of effective technical performance. For example, the form "Sanchin", found in Chinese traditions like White Crane Kung Fu and in many Okinawan and Japanese Karate systems in the Naha-te lineage, emphasizes exhalation on thrusting and attacking actions. Often, this is taught in the context of when limbs are moving toward your body, inhale. When your limbs are moving away from you and towards the opponent, exhale. Research like that described above provides evidence and context for additional sensory dimensions. No matter what you are doing, active sensing supported by respiration will be of benefit.
