The Mind of a Mass Murderer
What type of personality goes on a shooting rampage?

The massacre at the Colorado movie theatre—scores of innocent people injured and at least 12 allegedly killed by a single gunman, including many teens and a three month old infant—is a tragedy of huge proportion. All we know now is that it is a senseless mass murder (the term refers to a single event; serial killings are understood to occur at separate times). It is difficult to wrap our minds around this morning's events—who opens fire on a crowd, especially one comprised of teenagers? Who shoots an infant in the face? The motives for these appalling and tragic acts are unclear. Such rampages are motivated by a need for attention, fame, or revenge. Loss of touch with reality can play a part.
I spoke about the tragedy with John McCaslin and Dana Mills on America's Radio Show this morning: http://www.trn1.com/dr_-stephanie-newman-discusses-the-psychological-implications-of-the-colora
My heart goes out to the victims and their families.
