What Will People Think?
How social anxiety can hold you back, and how some people cope.

Susan is like a lot of people—she suffers from social anxiety disorder.
The typical symptoms of social anxiety disorder are the fear of being evaluated by others in social situations; the fear that one's anxiety will be obvious to others and that one will be humiliated; and the tendency to avoid these situations or to tolerate them with extreme discomfort. During any given year about 7% of adults suffer from social anxiety, and for many, these problems persist for years, often accompanied by depression and alcohol abuse. People with social anxiety often do not achieve what one would expect of them, because of their difficulty facing people and dealing with the discomfort of social situations. Interestingly, although women are more likely than men to suffer from social anxiety (1.5: 1 ratio), men are more likely than women to seek treatment, possibly because men in our culture are expected to be more assertive and confident socially.
- If I am anxious, then people will see my anxiety.
- If people see you are anxious, then they will think you are a loser.
- I should always appear in control and confident.
- I have to get the approval of everyone.
- If I don’t, it means I am defective or inferior.
- It’s terrible not to have people’s approval.
- There is a right way—a perfect way—to do things socially.
- I should always do things the perfect way when around other people
And people who are socially anxious often engage in “safety behaviors”—essentially, superstitious behaviors that they think make them more secure and less likely to unravel in public. Typical beliefs about safety behaviors include:
- If I hold a glass really tightly, then my hand won’t tremble.
- If I talk really fast, people won’t think I’m a loser and have nothing to say.
- If I have a few drinks, I can function better.
- If I prepare my talk and read it, then I won’t lose track.
- If I wear a jacket, they won’t see I am sweating.
When socially anxious people enter a situation they anticipate how they will unravel and worry about how they could make a fool of themselves. When interacting with people, they think that others are noticing every sign of their anxiety and judging them, and when they are finished, they engage in a “post-mortem” where they review their performance from the perspective of their most critical voice. If you have social anxiety you can probably see yourself in the following examples of typical social anxiety worries when meeting or speaking to people:
- Before an interaction: People will see that I am a nervous wreck. My mind will go blank. My hand will tremble. Even though some people like me, there are always people who won’t. If I look anxious, it will be just awful. I’ll bet no one else has these fears of speaking.
- During the interaction: She can see that I'm anxious. She sees my hands trembling. I’ll never get through this conversation. I just lost my train of thought. Even though I am doing OK right now, I could still mess it up. If I keep getting more anxious here, I will be totally unable to speak. I can see that everyone is focusing on me and noticing what a nervous wreck I am.
- Post-mortem: Everyone saw that I was nervous and that I was losing my train of thought. I will continue to mess up anytime I meet new people. I didn’t tell the story the right way. Even though people seemed interested in my conversation, no one asked me out. I can’t stand the fact that she didn’t seem interested in me. I was probably the only person at the party who was so uninteresting.
