Anais Nin opined that "Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born." Though some natural loners are happy without friends, most of humanity depends greatly on the company of true friends. People tend to befriend those who are similar in background, in personality, and sometimes even appearance, an assortative process that resembles the way in which people select prospective mates. A critical life skill is the ability to establish and maintain strong friendships, while artfully navigating toxic individuals, who may at first be ultra eager to form a friendship.
