As part of life, we all run into unexpected surprises, stresses, and losses. We change. These transitions can have an impact on our feelings, creating sometimes physical problems and/or impairing our ability to cope. Reaching out for help can be a scary thing for many people, and I am committed to help you access the resources you need to live life with integrity and quality. As a therapist, I believe in building a warm, trusting and collaborative relationship with you so that together we can get through your difficulties, developing and expanding your confidence in reaching your goals.

We all have things we struggle with. It is called being human. Sometimes our struggles affect our functioning, or maybe we just want life to feel a bit better than it currently does. Helping to make sense of small difficulties or massive challenges can be made easier with someone on your team to help.

I work with clients to help them clarify and resolve the issues they want to focus on. I consider it important to be able to work with clients in a way that they perceive as helpful and bring in a variety of methods. I have a particular interest in how the body holds trauma from past events such as sexual abuse, violence, lack of early safe attachment and other traumatic events and how this can be released and new memories created. I work in a holistic way and can help clients explore ways to help with anxiety and depression such as mindfulness, breathwork, meditation and yoga.

Seeking psychological help is a courageous step and I strive to make it understandable and effective for clients. Please feel free to email me. I tend to work in a transparent manner, explaining what we do and why, to increase your insight and engagement. A good “fit” between client and psychologist is key, and I would encourage you to look until you find that. I primarily offer Clinical Psychology assessment and therapy for the issues a client is experiencing, offering evidence-based strategies and coping skills. There are times when self-help, a good website, or a proven therapy book (bibliotherapy) will be what I advise too.

Life can bring challenges that require a space to talk things over. This is where Counselling can be beneficial; by supporting you to make sense of the things you are struggling with, find ways to cope, and discover strategies to help. I aim to provide a safe place for you to explore these various aspects of yourself, including both strengths and difficulties. Life Coaching can also be helpful in showing you a way forward, clarifying your goals and values and helping you to explore your talents and strengths. It can show us where we might be stuck and make us aware of old patterns of bahaviour that might be holding us back.

I offer a warm, accepting, and confidential space where you feel listened to. I have experience supporting people with wide-ranging issues including; relationship challenges, feeling disconnected, navigating life changes, loss, identity struggles, and low self-worth; and people who identify as highly sensitive or neurodiverse. Psychotherapy allows us to explore why we feel and behave the way we do and can help us learn to manage our emotions. Developing an understanding of ourselves and our patterns can give us new perspectives, help us make meaningful changes, and may help us accept things we can’t change.

Do you feel out of control with your emotions, leading to problematic behaviors and further unpleasant feelings? Sometimes your emotions are manageable, but other times overwhelming? Learn skills to manage emotions, cope with stress, solve problems, make better decisions, and be more mindful and accepting of life's challenges. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) can help. Developed by Marsha Linehan, DBT is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy effective for anxiety, depression, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and relationship issues. It teaches that "problem" behaviors are often coping mechanisms for distress.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
