Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists in Wellington
I work with individuals and couples who are functioning on the outside but struggling internally, feeling anxious, not good enough, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected in relationships, or stuck in painful repeating patterns. If you are a high performing, capable person but find yourself overthinking, shutting down, becoming defensive, or feeling uncertain in relationships, we might be a good fit. Men - I’m particularly committed to making therapy more accessible and effective for you, and focused my professional development on understanding and better responding to the ways you may experience and express emotional difficulties.

Using CBT and ACT, I focus on practical, structured work that leads to real change in daily life, often within a few focused sessions.
Knowing what to do and being able to do it are often two very different things. You may know you should stop overthinking, let go of obsessive thoughts, cut back on drinking, or handle conflict differently, yet keep finding yourself back in the same place. I specialise in addiction, OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, ADHD, and couples therapy, using practical, research-backed approaches to understand and change the patterns that keep you stuck. Separately from my private practice, I work as a counsellor at an inpatient rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland, supporting patients with complex addiction and mental health conditions.

Kia ora. I’m Glen. I’m a counsellor and I help people to find things.
Find peace. Find strength. Find connection. Find energy. Find answers. Find purpose. Find ways forward.
Because we can get a bit lost when we're challenged by life. Stuck. Confused. Conflicted.
To me, counselling is about making time and space in your week to untangle things, lay them out, move the pieces around and start to get a better picture of what is going on.
Then we can work with the realities of life rather than against them and hopefully move towards better days. Visit lostandfoundcounselling.co.nz for more info.

My ideal client is someone that is curious about themselves and others. They are willing to explore their behaviour and look at their protective layers. They are willing to risk and sometimes step out of their comfort zone. They would require respect and curiosity in therapy. The symptoms might be dysfunctional - anxiety, depression, relationship discord or adaptation issues, but they all serve a function.

We all want to live a life full of meaning and purpose. But sometimes our thoughts and feelings, habits, and attitudes seem to get in the way. The struggle with thoughts and feelings often leads to self-limiting choices and habits. Whatever difficulties you may be experiencing, there is always the potential for change. Reaching out to someone with a compassionate ear and practical suggestions is a first step in the right direction. I am passionate about helping people who are struggling, using tools I have learned through years of study, combined with my own personal life experiences and qualities.

Difficult thoughts and feelings arise when we care. We ignore them at our peril. Therapy provides a safe space to become clear about our feelings so we can move forward with our lives.
As the saying goes, life is one darn thing after another. We need to make sure it's not the same darn thing.
For over 20 years I have been privileged to work alongside clients as they make changes; sharing skills and strategies towards this end.

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
