I believe that the relationship we have with ourselves is paramount for personal growth, awareness and understanding. Only when we know ourselves with compassion, can we invite others into our lives without judgement and with respect. Relationships are based on communication, boundaries, love and empathy. When we learn these skills we develop more meaningful relationships and can live more fulfilling lives. The therapy journey with me is one filled with care, compassion, empathy, safety and hope.

My practice is grounded in Hakomi Somatic Psychotherapy, best described as body-centered, mindfulness based, assisted self-exploration. Explorations in mindfulness enable clients to access 'core beliefs': deep seated ideas and attitudes about self, the world and our place in it. Usually out of conscious awareness these beliefs influence relationships, self-image and drive habitual patterns of response and reaction. Exploring both the resources and limitations held within these old patterns, opens the possibility for increased choice and ease with ourselves others and the world around us.

How incredible you've made the first step and are on this website looking for the person to journey to the next level. Relationship is everywhere...it's what makes the world go round or halts your world. We are in and out of connection with ourselves, our partners/whānau, and environment. I believe we are doing the best we can with the skillset and information we have. Though sometimes our best doesn't seem like its enough or produce the results we desire. Often making changes in life is about getting new tools, adjusting our lens of the world, and adapting our beliefs and behaviors to feel safe to reconnect with possibilities.

As a trauma-focused and culturally sensitive practitioner, I offer a warm, non-judgemental space where you can feel truly seen, heard, and respected. I understand how deeply personal and unique each person’s journey is, and I believe healing happens through connection and understanding. Together, we can gently explore the narratives and challenges that may be holding you back, and begin to reconnect with your values, your voice, and your sense of self. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach — my hope is to walk alongside you as you move toward a life that feels more authentic, meaningful, and aligned with who you are.

Kia ora, I'm Paola. In therapy, change comes in waves and cycles, like with the tides. I provide my clients a safe and professional environment to navigate those therapeutic tides in the smoothest way possible. I bring to the therapeutic process competence, clarity and clinical discernment for the client to be able to dive safely in the deep waters of personal transformation. Clients report that they experience tangible results as enhanced self-esteem and trust, reduced severity of symptoms as anxiety, depression, grief or mental confusion, and the restoring of their capacity for secure, and organized relationships, among others.

Feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety, overthinking, low mood, burnout, or people-pleasing and unsure how to shift them? You may be navigating grief, relationship stress, relocation, or major life transitions where things feel heavier than you can carry alone. People often seek counselling when they notice repeated patterns such as avoidance, emotional overwhelm, difficulty setting boundaries, loneliness, or challenges adjusting to new environments, identities, cultures, and relationships. Counselling can offer a space to pause, reflect, and begin making sense of these experiences.

Many of the women I work with are in midlife or navigating menopause, feeling weighed down by anxiety, self-doubt, low confidence, or the sense of being “stuck.” Their goal isn’t just to cope - they want to feel calm, capable, and confident as they step into this next stage of life on their own terms.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
