Kia ora, my name is Jesse Nelson. I am passionate about working with people shoulder to shoulder to create a shared and safe space where we can journey together through life. I know it can get hard at times for all of us. I love to build rapport and connection so trust can develop quickly. I like to contract honesty as part of the work we will do together so you can feel free to be you.
Remember you are the expert of your life and I am only the facilitator of change providing a space where you can feel comfortable and vulnerable enough to make the changes you want. I will hold onto hope on your behalf and notice it when it emerges.

Kia ora, my name is Toni (ko Toni toku ingoa). I have been a counsellor for the past 12 years and early in my journey discovered my philosophy of counselling - "to be seen". What does that mean? For you to be seen in the room, authentically as you are, in a space free of judgment and assumption, for myself to be seen in the room as I am, and for that which is not yet known, to be seen. I worked for 10 years at Familial Trust supporting families/individual affected by addiction. I currently volunteer for FDS Aotearoa. I am also a qualified ACC counsellor working with survivors of sexual violence.

I believe that within all of us there are strengths and capabilities that we can access and grow to help us to cope with the challenges that modern daily life can bring. At times we can access these skills ourselves or with the support of loved ones, however sometimes, when that feels too hard a task, seeking the support of a professional can be crucial to regaining overall wellbeing. I am a registered psychologist originally from the UK and have been living in New Zealand since 2006.

I have a particular interest in anxiety, especially social anxiety. Other areas of interest include: grief, trauma, relationship issues, career aspirations/transitions, anxiety disorders (in general) and men's mental health. I feel at times men get left "behind" in the health system and do not utilise services as well as they could so I'm keen to promote support around men's mental health and have done academic research in this area.

Motivational Interviewing Counsellors
How does motivational interviewing work?
Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathises, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.
Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?
Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviours in children.
How long does motivational interviewing last?
Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.
What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?
In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behaviour.
