If you don't drop off when you put your head on your pillow, or you wake up during the night and can't get back to sleep for hours - then get in touch.
I specialise in treating insomnia and sleep difficulties. Insomnia is not a mental health disorder per se. It is a problem with the human sleep wake system. Insomnia doesn't respond to standard psychotherapy and requires specialist therapy using CBT-I. I am NZ's only Board Certified Behavioral Sleep Medicine practitioner.

My ideal client may be any age between 16 and 99. Motivated and curious. Ready to try some different ways of thinking and interacting with their body, feelings, mind and spirit. Open to exploring, with me ... their world view, how it has shaped life currently and how they would like it to look. Their issues may include relationships (parents, children, partner, divorce, colleagues etc) review and reset, anxiety, depression, self esteem, loss of direction, stuckness, ageing, loneliness, stereotyping. Their needs are typically to belong, be loved and respected with the goal of finding a peaceful heart and meaningful connections.

I work with adults and adolescents who feel worn down by their inner world, often in the context of trauma, chronic stress, or long periods of needing to hold it together. Many experience anxiety, emotional overwhelm, self-criticism, or avoidance, and find that their usual coping strategies are no longer working. I understand these responses as understandable adaptations rather than personal failings, and support clients to develop greater steadiness, choice, and a more meaningful, values-aligned way of living.

Being flexible in the way that we think and being open to change is essential for developing and strengthening positive psychological wellbeing. Being psychologically fit is the foundation of a vital life. We all have ingrained habits, beliefs, rules, behaviours and ways of thinking about the world. Some of these provide us the tools to navigate our lives in a positive and flexible way and some can be severely restrictive, impacting us all in unique ways, from complex mental health issues to performance related difficulties in our work and relationships.

Most of us come to therapy because we feel stuck in patterns we can't quite change. Living with intense anxiety or the weight of past trauma, can make it feel as though your life is being governed by forces just out of your reach. I believe that our struggles - anxiety, depression, or recurring conflicts - are not just problems to be solved, but our mind’s complicated ways of coping or protecting yourself. These patterns often developed for good reasons earlier in life, even if they no longer serve you now.

Kia Ora, I'm Paula I am a counsellor based in Aotearoa New Zealand and a qualified psychologist trained overseas. I have been helping people who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally exhausted. My clinical background is in Psychodynamic psychotherapy with emphasis on Attachment theory and human development across the life span. Having an in-depth understanding of how our early beginnings impact our view of self, life, and relationships, assists me to support my clients toward developing empathy and compassion for themselves and others. I believe this can be an integral factor in the healing process and in attaining a sense of personal freedom.

I'm originally from London, UK, and have called New Zealand home for much of the last 15 years. I'm a husband, father, and counsellor with a deep interest in what it means to be human and how our experiences shape who we become. I work with teens and adults facing a range of challenges, including addiction, trauma, sexual abuse, compulsive behaviours (i.e pornography or gaming), relationship difficulties, and questions around identity and self-understanding. I also work with couples and am ACC registered for sensitive claims.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
