Psychotherapy is helpful in understanding oneself and one’s emotional patterns. Often one may get caught up in repeated patterns and psychotherapy can help reflecting on these to build awareness into them. The most important thing is us being able to work out a working relationship between us and understand your goals for being in therapy. This can help us see how your past informs your present as well as figure out ways to handle the current issues and future. I look at therapy as a way of rewriting your life story – us being able to co-construct a different version of yourself and your life.

Successful counselling is based on the quality of the relationship between myself (the therapist) and you (the client). My approach is based on deep respect and non-judgemental acceptance for all people I work with. Utilising an element of creativity within therapy enables you to speak through art making, and reflection, because sometimes spoken words don’t exist for your experience. In my practice I offer counselling and arts therapy, professional supervision and coaching, and career development.

Joanne facilitates confidential conversations with individuals and couples that opens up space for an exploration of problems, associated trauma (micro or macro) and focuses on what it means to you to reconnect back to self, by using developmental models of therapeutic change. By developing an awareness that when core needs/values are compromised, maladaptive emotional/behavioural patterns are created as a pattern of survival. Joanne facilitates an understanding of this conflict to improve the relationships with self and others, by noticing what gets in the way of experiencing a wealth of well-being.

As an ACC therapist, I help people cope with sexual abuse trauma, brain injuries, chronic pain, childhood abuse or neglect, and the effects of family violence. Private clients often come with "problems of living", including grief and bereavement, health challenges, relationship problems and work-related stress. Others seek help for anxiety and depression, or for more serious mental health difficulties, including bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. I also apply my skills in helping people sifting through complicated issues in the domain of wealth counselling.

Open to exploring, with me ... their world view, how it has shaped life currently and how they would like it to look. Their issues may include relationships (parents, children, partner , divorce, colleagues etc) review and reset, anxiety, depression, self esteem, loss of direction, stuckness, ageing, loneliness, stereotyping. Their needs are typically to belong, be loved and respected with the goal of finding a peaceful heart and meaningful connections.

Together we would explore your history, your family of origin, your way of being in relationship (your attachment style) and also any trauma (defining trauma as anything that was too overwhelming to feel alone).
Perhaps you have tried strategies that no longer work. Perhaps you have had support before and would now like to try it again or continue where you left off. Perhaps there is something specific that you would like to gain more insight into and healing from. Whatever your reason for coming, you will find a safe, non-judgemental and accepting environment where you will have a confidential space to bring whatever you would like to work through at a pace and depth that feels safe to you.

Some of my areas of specialization are: migration and cultural issues, change and life transitions, relationship issues, problems with communication, grief and loss, self-esteem issues, stress and anxiety, depression.
I offer both short-term, solution-focused counselling, and long-term psychotherapeutic support using a client-centered and strength-based approach that draws on mindfulness, the body-feelings-mind connection and neuroscience. I help clients develop self-understanding, a calm and trusting relationship with themselves, and feel empowered to take positive action in their life. We will work together to identify your existing resources, and I can supplement them with professional insights, reframes and a wide range of tools, accumulated over my years in practice, to provide tailored additional strategies as required.

I specialise in women's health issues, and see individuals and couples impacted by fertility-related challenges, adjustment to parenthood, perimenopause and menopause, and gynaecological/endocrinological issues. My clients often present with mental health challenges including anxiety, low mood, trauma; and stress/burnout. Other common challenges are relationship issues, career/job stress, issues with identity and life purpose. My clients want to better understand the often confusing mix of factors contributing to their stuckness and to learn science-based tools to reduce suffering and help them thrive.

I train in different methods and techniques and tailor the session to your needs. HOLISTIC My approach to well-being and happiness is holistic. I look at the different elements in your life and your environment to better understand where you are at right now and what you need. I work on being present, mindful, and accepting. EMPOWERING I believe in giving people tools to apply in their lives outside of the therapy room. I like to give people the autonomy to make choices and perfect their reflective skills.

Typically I see men, adolescent boys, couples , groups and families.
Sometimes we all need the space to take time out to reflect on what's going on with us; or to talk to someone outside our immediate family and friends, a trained and experienced professional, who can assist us to think and feel deeper into our life, work and relationships. As we do this we begin to feel more human, more in balance and more able to warm up to our own spontaneity, vitality and creativity in response to what is required- be it coming to some resolutions, developing or strengthening aspects of ourselves, moving forward, or 'leaning into' our lives in a more dynamic or committed way. Therapy assists.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
