I am trained primarily in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (including mindfulness informed CBT ) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, in addition to gaining expertise in Trauma-informed therapy.
It’s an honour to be able to walk alongside people when they are in a time in their life when things feel particularly hard, they have big questions about who they are, or are trying to find meaning and purpose in their life. I believe that good therapy happens in the context of a trusting relationship and that this is where my strength lies- I am warm, level-headed, empathetic, and non-judgemental, and strive to work collaboratively, flexibly, and creatively with my clients. I want people to walk out of my sessions feeling supported, safe, and more equipped with psychological tools in their kete to deal with their challenges.

Sometimes we all need space to reflect on what’s going on or to talk with someone outside our immediate circle. Therapy is a confidential space that can help you to develop the insight and skill you need to work through difficult or challenging experiences and find ways to live a life with greater resilience and purpose. My approach is empathetic, warm and non-judgemental. I work flexibly and collaboratively with my clients and believe in tailoring therapy to meet their individual needs.

Insomnia doesn't respond to standard psychotherapy and requires specialist therapy using CBT -I.
You have trouble sleeping. You're tired (mind the pun) of lying awake at night tossing & turning. The thought of going to bed makes you worry. You don't drop off when you put your head on your pillow. If you do, you wake up during the night and can't get back to sleep for hours. You worry about the toll your sleeplessness is having on your health, your mood, your relationships and your ability to function at work. You want to sleep better. You want to look forward to bedtime. You want to wake up feeling refreshed. You want to feel like sleep isn't controlling your life. Assess your insomnia here: https://www.thebettersleepclinic.com

Garey is trained in Gottman, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Emotional Focused Therapy which are recognised as being effective in helping clients develop and improve their relationships.
There are times in life when we all need someone to talk to, who will not judge us or make us feel ashamed. I seek to provide a place where women and men are able to process the disappointments of life that lead to unhelpful behaviours and difficult relationships. In my work with couples and individuals, I provide a safe environment where both people can explore the issues that have caused them to build walls rather than bridges between them. I have years of experience helping clients to identify the triggers for unhelpful and destructive behaviours and offer ongoing support to choose new directions and pathways towards their goals

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
