Valerie Fridland, Ph.D., is a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada, Reno, and the author of Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English. Her new book, Why We Talk Funny: The Real Story Behind Our Accents, explores the history and science of accents and the enduring social power of sounding different. In addition to numerous academic articles, she also writes regularly for the popular Grammar Girl podcast and has a lecture series available with Great Courses. A frequent media expert, her popular facing work has been featured or discussed in outlets ranging from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times to Armchair Expert, Entrepreneur, Marketplace, and NPR.
