Asha Shajahan MD, MHSA

About

Asha Shajahan, MD, MHSA, is a board-certified family physician. She is an assistant professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. She also has a master’s degree in Health Services Administration. She serves as the Medical Director of Community Health and Graduate Medical Education Director of Health Equity and Disparities at Beaumont Health in Michigan.

As an Alfred Landecker Democracy fellow, she is passionate about advancing democratic spaces in the face of COVID-19 through battling medical misinformation. She co-hosts the award-winning healthcare podcast Beaumont HouseCall. She believes in empowering people through media outreach to live healthier lives and has written for several national news outlets such as the Huffington Post and USA Today. She has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, BBC News, and Modern Healthcare among many other publications for improving health in her community.

Dr. Shajahan is the founder of Dance Medicine, MD, a volunteer organization of health professionals that serve predominantly underserved populations who cannot afford to pay for exercise, have limited access to cultural dance forms, and strive for social connection. She co-designed the 8 Dimensions of Wellness course that has been taught in various communities across Metro-Detroit. She has received numerous recognitions including a 2020 Healthcare Hero by Crain’s Business Detroit for her work with the homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Joyce Ivy Foundation 2019 Woman of Impact Award, and a 2017 Crain’s Detroit 40 under 40 for her work in disparities. She was also named the Diversity Champion for Beaumont Health in 2018 by the Race Relations and Diversity Taskforce of Michigan. Dr. Shajahan is dedicated to educating people on improving health through understanding the social determinants, culture, nature, creativity, and the mind-body-purpose connection
