Andrew Penn RN, MS, NP

Andrew Penn, RN, MS, NP, trained in psychology at UC Santa Cruz and in psychiatric nursing at UC San Francisco. Since training, he has worked as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, consultant, and educator. Currently, he is appointed as a Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing where he teaches psychiatric nursing, psychiatric assessment, and psychopharmacology. He is an attending NP at the San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital NP residency program, working with veterans with PTSD and mood disorders.

After pursuing postgraduate training at California Institute of Integral Studies in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, he became a study therapist on the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics Studies sponsored Phase III study of MDMA Assisted therapy for PTSD. He recently co-authored a chapter in Positive Psychiatry: A Casebook, published by American Psychiatric Association press, a case study of a patient who was treated with MDMA Assisted Therapy for PTSD. He is a founding member of OPENurses.org, a professional organization for nurses interested in psychedelic assisted therapies.

An internationally invited speaker at continuing education and society meetings, he is particularly interested in the intersections between the humanities and psychiatric science. As a member of the steering committee for Psych Congress and Elevate, he has spoken widely and blogged extensively about cannabinoids in psychiatry, bipolar disorder, psychedelic assisted therapy, and the art of psychopharmacology.
