I'm curious which emotion a child might feel if they fail, week after week, to win a race that their peers have mostly all won. Certainly embarrassment for not having something that the group of people they identify with all have, but could they feel ashamed? You explained shame as a response to a lack of moral character; could that also include physical abilities?

I suppose that it's not much different for people who perceive themselves to be physically "deformed" or even "ugly." As a kid i thought i was ugly (based on a mean kid saying i was ugly once) and i would describe the feeling i had as shame. Can you talk about this a little more- do people consider appearance to be associated with morality?
