When Language Disappears, Thought Remains
A new study confirms what Frank Muldowney has known for 40 years.

In 2024, Frank Muldowney won the lottery. Not the financial kind.
He finally learned, nearly four decades after brain surgery at the age of 19, that he had Wernicke's aphasia. This condition affects language comprehension and production, caused in his case by an arteriovenous malformation that burst in 1985.
"It felt like winning the lottery," he told me, "because my whole life suddenly made sense."
Frank reached out to me recently through LinkedIn. He is currently writing a book about his experience, the first time, he says, he has truly been able to put his thoughts into words. What he shared with me in our written exchange stopped me more than once.
What 1985 Took and What It Didn't
Frank was 19 when the surgery changed his relationship with language. In the weeks and months that followed, words sounded like noise. He couldn't read. The world stopped making sense through language, and so he went somewhere else.
"I went inward to escape the confusion," he said, "and the silence became my friend."
What happened inside that silence is the part most people, including the medical professionals around him at the time, didn't understand.
"I never felt that I had lost my ability to think," Frank told me. "I lost the language I had used to communicate my thoughts. Language began to feel like a human-made tool, while my thinking came naturally through my senses. It was like comparing a bicycle to walking. The bicycle is useful, but walking is part of who we are."
What the Science Now Confirms
A study published this month in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) by researchers at MIT and colleagues found, using both brain imaging and direct work with aphasia patients, that logical reasoning and language are handled by entirely separate neural systems (Kean et al., 2026). The brain's language network showed no meaningful engagement during formal reasoning tasks. Patients with severe aphasia, who had lost significant language function, reasoned just as accurately as people without aphasia.
Frank didn't need a brain scanner to know this. He lived it.
"My thinking became different," he said. "I lived in the present, and time felt more like a circle than a straight line. All my senses magnified and became my true language. Instead of depending on man-made linear sentences, I understood the world through images, feelings, rhythm and intuition."
The Gap Between Understanding and Speaking
One of the most striking things Frank described is something the PNAS study can confirm neurologically but cannot fully capture: what it actually feels like to have a thought that language cannot reach.
"There was a vast void between what I experienced and what I could express," he said. "I knew there was far more inside me than words could ever describe. For me, the pauses between words often carry more meaning than what is spoken or typed."
This gap had consequences far beyond communication. His family, trying to care for a 19-year-old who had been told he had brain damage, didn't know how to reach him. In the 1980s, understanding of aphasia was limited, and the confusion between losing language and losing intelligence was nearly universal.
"Subconsciously, our normal emotions had switched off," Frank said, "leaving a void between us."
He drifted. Epilepsy arrived. He found other languages: music, drawing, dance, silent films, pilgrimages through Spain, France, and Peru, where walking through nature for weeks became, as he put it, "another language."
Why He Is Writing the Book
Frank eventually discovered that more than 12 million people worldwide live with aphasia. Many, he believes, are in the same position he was in for almost 40 years: unable to fully express themselves, and unaware that millions of others share that experience.
"Writing my book became my way of helping to restore that balance," he told me. "It was my chance to give a voice to people whose thoughts often remain hidden behind the struggle to communicate."
On what he would say to someone at the beginning of this journey, Frank was characteristically precise. "Don't let other people decide what you're capable of," he said. "Because they only see your words, not your mind."
What This Means Beyond Aphasia
Frank's story is not only about aphasia. It is about something most of us have experienced in smaller, quieter ways: the feeling of knowing something before we can say it, of understanding more than our words quite reach, of thinking in images or emotions or sensations that language arrives at second.
The neuroscience now tells us this isn't metaphor. It is how the brain works.
"Thought itself is much bigger," Frank said. "Sometimes I experience an image, a feeling, or a rhythm long before I can find the words for it."
His value, he told me, has never depended on how easily he can speak. Neither, it turns out, does his thinking.
