Tara Thiagarajan Ph.D., and Jennifer J. Newson Ph.D.
Tara Thiagarajan, Ph.D. is Founder and Chief Scientist of Sapien Labs. Her work focuses on new approaches to understanding brain signals and how they inform our individual differences along dimensions of cognition and mental health. Her research includes large scale global collaborations to understand the diversity of human brain signals across different populations and how they are influenced by environment, socioeconomics and other factors across the lifespan. Areas of particular interest include understanding how elements of modernization have influenced the development and capability of the human brain, as well as developing context-specific readouts of cognitive and mental health using brain signals. She has worked on brain signals at different levels from neuronal action potentials and local field potentials to ECOG and EEG across a variety of species from rats and mice to monkeys and humans. Tara conducted her doctoral research in Neuroscience at Stanford University and her postdoctoral research at the Section on Critical Brain Dynamics at the National Institutes of Health.
Jennifer Newson, Ph.D., is a lead researcher at Sapien Labs and has scientific interests spanning brain imaging, cognition, and psychological health. Her research focuses on new paradigms to assist the definition and assessment of cognitive and mental health. Of particular interest is to uncover the relationships between constellations of symptoms and brain signals. She has a BSc in Neuroscience from Edinburgh University and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Oxford University, UK. She did her postdoctoral work at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London and spent eight years leading the Neuroscience Research Group at Givaudan, the world’s largest Fragrance and Flavour company.
