Elizabeth McMahon, Ph.D., is a psychologist who has specialized in treating anxiety for over 40 years and has used virtual reality (VR) with clients since 2010. Her self-help book Overcoming Anxiety and Panic Interactive Guide describes why people develop anxiety, fear, or panic, explains in clear detail what happens in the brain and body, and describes specific steps for overcoming anxiety and panic.

Other publications include book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals on VR therapy for anxiety and the therapist manual, Virtual Reality Therapy for Anxiety: A Guide for Therapists (with D. Boeldt, Ph.D.) which explains the many uses of VR in treating a wide range of anxiety disorders illustrated with case examples.

In addition to writing and maintaining a private practice in San Francisco, Dr. McMahon provides trainings and consultation to mental health professionals internationally on topics such as using VR in treating anxiety, VR exposure therapy (VRET), integrative cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic, anxiety, and fears, interoceptive exposure, and other topics.
