Men of ancient times DID ask for directions.
But we killed them all off. Because being 'ignorant', vague or collaborating in a leadership role is more deadly to a man that being flat-out wrong.
So here's your tribal unit and you're hunting bison or migrating in the winter. Your life is on the line, and it all hinges on the leadership of the Alpha Male (leader). As he shows indecision as to directing the group left or right at a mountain pass, - he'll find himself having an 'accident' falling off a cliff, - and the Beta Male stepping up to the plate to lead the clan. It also helps to invoke 'divine' inspiration to instill confidence from others in the group.
Bottom line? - In the end men can afford to be 'wrong', - but can't afford to loose a confidence from others.
