The use of new technology to help and diagnose people with mental health problems is an interesting area. I have created a non-profit organisation that is looking into the use of new technology such as Serious Games and Virtual Reality to aid the clinician in treating their patients (http://www.pervasive-technology-lab.org). For example, under development is a Serious Game (a computer game with a serious purpose) to educate people in what actions to take when they feel depressed and provide media that will lift their mood. Other systems such as Virtual Reality have been used to habituate people to phobias such as a fear of flying. By exposing people to their fear in a safe environment their fear is reduced. The potential for technology to support people with mental health problems are therefore enormous.
