Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I fail to see how vague examples of "unconscious" self-deception can help someone be truthful about the self. Especially when you start with the premise that you are lying to yourself but there is, in fact, an objective truth out there that you can uncover. While I usually support critical self-analysis , it seems the only logical conclusion in this scenario is to engage the assistance of someone you trust. Because, apparently, you cannot trust yourself to be forthright.
