Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

The tips largely center around changing the cues - but I know, exactly what mine is, and it occurs as soon as I lie down in bed at night & try to go to sleep.
I'm lost as to how to change that? I can't move house or even move my room around as it's so small.
Do you have any tips or articles you can provide specifically for ruminating immediately proceeding sleep? I've gone months now without one proper nights sleep. I eventually fall asleep purely from exhaustion eventually but then the ruminating continues throughout the night/in dreams. This lack of sleep is really starting to effect me very negatively.
