Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

I don't so much feel that people laugh at my appearance like some of you have mentioned, but I always have it in the back of my mind that people find amusement in my misfortunes (if I have any!) like failing exams, losing a job...I always feel like people gloat because they like to feel they're superior. I suppose that's more social comparison than downright mockery. But it kind of feels the same for me.
