Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

My orange male cat was much bigger than his siblings. He was the only orange one and very friendly. Not aggressive. His paws were huge, and his tail was so super long that the vet remarked on it as unusual. I think these findings are pretty interesting, and I guess in my experience with at least one orange cat the stereotypes seem true.
