I think many cultures have made much of the ceremony of relaxing as a group. NZ Maori for example. While I agree with your sentiments to some degree I think it is healthy when teens are encouraged and expected to be present at planned group recreation time. I think private, unplanned wanderings need a balance of 'normal' activities to avoid depression and isolation.
