While love between and among other people is ideal for most, some individuals can derive great emotional nourishment from the bonds and connections they form with their pets. So, "loving and being loved" does not necessarily involve romantic partners, family members or friends. But for most people it is does. Still, some people seem to do fine as "loners" and report good life satisfaction even without an companionable pet.
