Why are so many people drawn to conspiracy theories in times of crisis?

where does it say it's a bad thing generally? it's only a bad thing for someone who is being lead on. if you're clear upfront then what's the issue? if you continue to give people false hope or act /behave in a way that is differently than what you say then it's an issue...
maybe i didn't read into what the article said as you did but nowhere did i see that being emotionally unavailable was a bad thing for everyone all the time.
