Coping with Trauma
Disaster can strike in many ways, there are manmade catastrophes like school shootings and terror attacks, and there are natural disasters like earthquakes and tornadoes. After any distressing or life-threatening event, psychological trauma may set in. Sufferers may develop extreme anxiety, anger, sadness, or PTSD, or they may have ongoing problems with sleep or physical pain, and even relationships or self-esteem. Trauma is well studied and there are healthy ways of coping, such as avoiding alcohol and drugs, seeing loved ones, exercising, sleeping, and other methods of self-care. Many people overcome trauma, offering inspiration to others who have had life-altering negative experiences.
