I find that many of my clients have difficulty in understanding their issues. My best source of learning has been my own life. Of course, college was needed for the academic side but there is no replacement for life experience. I have come through addiction. I used substances to overcome fears and inhibitions. I lost a wonderful marriage, a high-level job and fabulous home. I lived on the streets. I brought fear, loss and torment to friends and family. I worked my way into this area of work because I survived and am now in a position to help people because I understand what addiction, loss, panic and stress can cause
Addiction and its attaching issues is my specialty. I understand also how people can use a substance to overcome something as simple as shyness or as complicated as fear and panic. I understand what families of addicts go through and how helping and enabling are regularly confused. I know what a panic attack feels like. I know what depression feels like
As mentioned, my own life has been my greatest teacher. I have often felt that "nobody could possibly feel this bad" or "nobody understands what I am feeling". More often than not I was correct. People don't understand addiction, don't understand panic, don't understand depression. But I do because I have lived through these and much more.
