It can be really daunting to start or resume therapy and that's why I focus on creating a space that is warm and safe, to help you feel more comfortable figuring out what's troubling you and unpacking your feelings, thoughts and experiences. I particularly love to help people discover who they are beyond who they have learned to be through their life experiences and environment. I will work collaboratively with you using various therapeutic approaches such as humanistic, CBT, narrative, attachment theory and creative techniques, based on what you need and prefer.

I decided to train as a professional counsellor after my own experience with depression. It's such an incredible privilege to be able to use my own life experiences to help others. Whichever way we work together, the relationship between us will be what enables the changes you wish to make and I will consistently offer empathy and support, no matter how difficult some of the things we deal with may be, and to be honest and upfront with you. This will help to nurture an environment in which you feel truly heard, valued, and empowered to make positive change.

Making the decision to come to therapy can be a difficult one. We often have lots of questions about what to expect, what it might be like and whether or not we need it. I understand this experience as I have been there myself, so I aim to provide a warm, welcoming and understanding environment to make this process as manageable as possible for you. The focus of my practice is in providing a safe, understanding and unconditional space for us to explore the current difficulties that you may be experiencing. I work relationally with my clients.

Choosing to come to therapy may seem daunting, and yet if you have come this far you have already made the first step. Simply put, life can become difficult for us sometimes and we may need more support than our friends and family can offer. If you are experiencing feelings of being lost or stuck, sadness, anxiety or stress or simply that you just don't know what is wrong but things just don't feel right, then therapy can help.

There are many reasons to engage in therapy. If you have found your way here, I imagine you may be struggling with some part of yourself or with someone in your life. You might be looking for help and support with problems that seem overwhelming. You may have a sense that you are not living the life you want to live and wish to step more confidently forward. Psychotherapy offers you a chance to slow down and step out of your daily life, refocus on your needs and goals, a path of self-development and learning.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
