Many people endure depression that goes beyond normal fluctuations in mood that most people experience, this can significantly impact a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.
I am a trained Psychotherapist based in Roscommon town, I hold a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy and I’m pre-accredited with the IACP. I use predominantly person-centered hu manistic counselling although this varies depending on the client’s needs. To supplement the person-centered approach, I also use psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is very effective for dealing with intrusive and troubling thoughts. For some clients with childhood trauma the option is there to apply inner-child-work to support and help heal the emotional connections to these memories.

I get great energy from listening to people and journeying with them. I believe I am empathetic and open. I can facilitate people to process their problems and I can offer feedback and some solutions if necessary. However I am just as happy to stay with the person where solutions aren’t there. I really believe in the counselling process and how it can help people.

As a Counsellor Psychotherapist I employ a Hu manistic approach to counselling. I encourage self-awareness and self-realisation in an individual. I believe people have within themselves all the resources they need to lead healthy and fulfilled lives. As a counsellor I see myself helping clients to discover and access within themselves the restricted resources they need to solve problems. Helping the client safely find their way to the solution. I believe in the best interests of the client at all times and treat everyone with dignity and respect in a non-judgemental authentic approach.

I believe in the imper manence of life's challenges and the importance of finding humor in life's absurdities.
While my approach is informed by hu manist theories, I do not let these theories limit or define my work. I strive to meet clients where they are in their lives and understand their future aspirations. This understanding helps me tailor my therapeutic approach to best suit each individual. I make it a point to regularly check in with clients to ensure the path we're on is effective and aligned with their needs.

Clients normally require a few sessions but how many you want to do is up to you.
I am committed to providing a confidential safe and non-judgemental space for clients to explore their thoughts and feelings in relation to issues that need resolution and help achieve the client’s goals. I work from a person-centred perspective placing great importance on the therapeutic relationship, which empowers you to find your own answers. I draw on concepts in existential philosophy (what it is to be hu man). My role will be to listen, bringing your attention to things you might not have noticed, suggesting things to consider, and assisting you in exploring a different perspective, and deepen your understanding of yourself. i

My approach to counselling is integrative, primarily Hu manistic, CBT and Solution-Focused.
Is something on your mind? Perhaps something from your past that you've never fully dealt with? Counselling can help, allowing you the time to talk about what's going on for you in a non-judgemental and safe space. Working with a counsellor, you can find out your truth, have a better understanding of why you do and think the things you do, discover coping mechanisms and lighten your load. If that's something you would like to do with me then I would love to hear from you.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
