Male Counselling in Edenderry, OY
My experience in supporting clients with mental health concerns has been built over the last 15 years. I work with children, adolescents, couples and individual adults. In the first session the aim is to get to know each other and figure out how we will work together, set up therapy goals and agree on the frequency of the sessions. I will take a detailed history and gain a strong understanding of the current issue by the end of the session. Have a look at my website for more information. www.donalreillypsychotherapycounseling.com

I use an integrative eclectic approach, which is essentially elements of different therapy models, including Person Centred Therapy, Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Internal Family Systems, and Gestalt Therapy, with the aim of building a greater awareness of yourself as a whole rather than just your thoughts. I focus on you and what you can change. I believe that understanding, and being aware of, your current thoughts and feelings then allows you the space to explore and imagine new ways of thinking and behaving that are more in line with your ideal self.

While I work with adults of all age, I specialise in working with young adults/emerging adults through their transitional journey into adulthood. Giving space where they can freely explore their inner world. Their issues may revolve around a sense of existential questioning, identity exploration, or navigating life ups and downs. I provide an empathetic presence, foster self-discovery, and delve into the underlying emotional roots of their struggles. Together, we unravel the layers of their being, ignite their inner wisdom, and facilitate a transformative process that leads to authenticity, growth, and a life lived with intention.

At the heart of therapy is awareness. I hold space for my clients to process their distressing experiences, while also exploring and understanding the 'why' behind the ways our past experiences are dictating the way we live our lives through our thoughts and behaviours. At a pace entirely dictated by the client, we'll walk through the complexity of living in today's world, from difficult moments or life choices to deeply traumatic experiences. I will also provide the tools needed to challenge negative thoughts, manage situations, and begin creating healthier habits. I see clients in-person, online, or through walk and talk therapy.

Are you feeling anxious, stressed, unhappy, overwhelmed or struggling with an aspect of your life? Feeling this way can negatively impact on our lives, work, self-esteem and relationships, often leaving us feeling worried, trapped or stuck. Talking with a therapist can help. Dave seeks to provide an open, non-judgmental, safe and compassionate therapeutic space in which clients can discuss and explore their issues or difficult experiences, in order to empower change and facilitate self-understanding, healing and personal growth.

When something in your life is not how you'd like it to be, or when you're looking for help and support for something that you're going through; perhaps a life event, a particular concern or maybe problems with relationships, at home, in school or at work. Maybe you are experiencing feelings of anxiety, frustration, fear, sadness or other emotions. Stress can be a part of this. Counselling can help you to better understand what might be going on for you, and to find ways to effectively manage feelings, thoughts or worries. My experience is that clients come to counselling because they want something in their life to be different.

Life and relating to others can at times feel very hard. Please do contact me if any or a combination of the following reflect your experience as my support seems to be most effective in these areas: Feeling alone or isolated; living with a sense of fear, dread or being overwhelmed; trying to cope with events that are or have been ‘traumatic’; lacking confidence in your own abilities and judgement; or having a sense of deep pain. I believe and know that despite the pain and distress these can cause, there is also the possibility for healing, growth, making changes and (re)finding a sense of self, purpose and joy in life again.

I have helped many of my clients to work through their behaviours, thoughts and feelings, which has enabled them to live a more content and secure life.
Making the decision to come to therapy can be a difficult one. We often have lots of questions about what to expect, what it might be like and whether or not we need it. I understand this experience as I have been there myself, so I aim to provide a warm, welcoming and understanding environment to make this process as manageable as possible for you. The focus of my practice is in providing a safe, understanding and unconditional space for us to explore the current difficulties that you may be experiencing. I work relationally with my clients.

When we are suffering we tend to look at all that is wrong in our lives. We sometimes make judgements and assumptions about ourselves or our situations that focus mainly on the negative. We each have developed ways of being in the world that have enabled us to cope with whatever challenges we have had to face. These coping strategies become our defence mechanisms and are often developed by us at an early age when we had few resources. They can sometimes create negative patterns of relating to others and the world around us and become barriers to intimate or professional relationships.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
