Both internships offered psychotherapeutic intervention using Art psychotherapy for service users presenting with trauma-related symptoms, attachment deficits, depression, anxiety, ADHD, separation and loss.
Young people experiencing emotional and behavioural disturbances can find it challenging to communicate or understand why they feel this way. The process of Child Art Psychotherapy can benefit in many ways as it is relational and fosters consistency and containment. The psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approach of Art Psychotherapy incorporates verbal and non-verbal communication to gain insight into the child's thoughts and beliefs systems. The focus of therapy is to understand the unconscious material that influences behaviour and emotions in order to foster change and promote healthy psychological functioning.

My own journey into psychology began with an interest into how we tick as human beings and why some of us seem to suffer and cope better than others. I soon realised that where I really needed to be was with people, helping them better understand and heal themselves. Now, as a qualified psychotherapist for many years, I not only get to do just that, but I also get to witness first-hand the courage and growth of my clients that is forever inspirational.

I have dealt with various issues such as anxiety, depression (including post natal), life transitions, coercive relationships and also grief and loss.
Hi, I am very much a Person-Centred / Humanistic Counsellor who allows the client to explore their issues and find their own way forward. I believe that sometimes we just need to stop and breath and allow ourselves the space to explore what’s next for us. I understand that counselling is not a 'one size fits all' process so I work on an integrated basis with the client to explore the therapies that will work for them. I have a special interest in bereavement as I have been working with clients who have lost loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. My own history of loss has helped me a great deal in this area.

I’m an ADHDer. I know what it’s like to feel like the world wasn’t quite built for your brain or nervous system! I work with people who’ve spent years wondering why everything feels harder than it should. Those newly diagnosed, late-diagnosed, or those suspecting they might be neurodivergent and wanting space to explore that. You are all very welcome. Life has a way of pulling the rug out. Perimenopause. A new baby. Starting college and losing all structure overnight. These can be the turning point moments an ADHD brain finally says “enough.” If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
