Life transition, family and friends losses, the breakup of long-term relationships, stress, anxiety and depression are all part of human suffering.
I use a somatic approach to address present concerns, supplementing it with CBT/ACT and mindfulness exercises. Experiential learning and skills development empower my clients to apply what they learn to their daily lives. While I enjoy working with clients facing a wide range of difficulties, I have a particular interest in anxiety, OCD and trauma

Talking is medicine. I don't mean it's like medicine; I mean IT IS medicine. It heals. It gives clarity and perspective; It makes people feel better. I have been lucky enough to help and witness people change how they think and feel so that life feels easier - not so damn difficult all the time. I have seen the smiles on faces as lifelong emotional burdens are put down and life can be lived fully again. I have had the privilege of helping people from all walks of life deal with many types of issues; from the immediate, such as trouble with work, to challenges and issues whose roots stretch back to childhood.

Listening to my clients' feedback, the most notable 'shift' for them came from my use of EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and IFS , you don't need to worry about what that all means but I can tell you about it if you would like to make the first move towards feeling ok in the world.
Ruth warmly welcomes you to her Psychotherapy and Counselling practice. With the DCU MSc in Psychotherapy, she is IACP Accredited, highly qualified and experienced in working with adults, couples and adolescents who present with a broad range of issues. She has completed advanced trainings in cutting edge evidence based practices including EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems, 'game-changers' for trauma therapy. She has a Post Graduate Diploma in Adolescent Psychotherapy and draws from a diverse range of creative approaches. She looks forward to meeting you where she can provide you with the therapy you need.

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand, worn down by anxiety, self‑doubt, burnout or the pressure to keep everything together.
I work with people experiencing anxiety, ADHD, suicidal thoughts, burnout, perfectionism, low self‑esteem, emotional overwhelm, life transitions and feelings of being stuck or disconnected. My approach is warm, collaborative and trauma‑informed, shaped around your individual needs rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all model. I support Autistic and LGBTQ+ clients.

Symptoms may include stress, anxiety, conflict, overwhelm, poor self esteem and issues with boundaries, balance and success.
I work with women that feel stuck, particularly in relationships or professional situations that have them feeling overwhelmed, overlooked, unappreciated or undervalued. I help them release any latent beliefs or stories that are holding them back and reconnect to their most powerful and successful selves with a renewed sense of identity, a vision for how they'd like their life to be and the ability to reach their potential to get there.

Many people come with anxiety, relationship difficulties, or questions around identity and sexuality.
The work allows for a shift in how symptoms are experienced, and in how tightly they organise your life. Over time, this can open up a different way of relating to yourself and to others, allowing you to feel less constrained by familiar difficulties and more at ease in your relationships and everyday life.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
