Many people come with anxiety, relationship difficulties, or questions around identity and sexuality.
The work allows for a shift in how symptoms are experienced, and in how tightly they organise your life. Over time, this can open up a different way of relating to yourself and to others, allowing you to feel less constrained by familiar difficulties and more at ease in your relationships and everyday life.

A Psychoanalytic approach to therapy takes your symptoms (such as anxiety, depressed mood, ADHD or excess appetite etc.) as meaningful responses to something going on in your life - in either the present or the past.
Hi - my name is Joe Cleary and I'm a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist working with adults in Dundalk, one-to-one. A psychoanalytic approach is best suited to resolving deeper, more complex issues. It's a good approach if someone wants to understand themselves more deeply and effect permanent change. I'm accredited with the APPI and I've over 15 years clinical experience with an extensive range of issues, from acute psychiatric ill health to difficult life changes and situations. I offer support during difficult times, to help you gain deeper insight and figure out how to improve your life.

Using a mix of talk therapy, body awareness, and coaching, I create a space where you can explore what’s going on beneath the surface. Life transition, family and friends losses, the breakup of long-term relationships, stress, anxiety and depression are all part of human suffering.
I use a somatic approach to address present concerns, supplementing it with CBT/ACT and mindfulness exercises. Experiential learning and skills development empower my clients to apply what they learn to their daily lives. While I enjoy working with clients facing a wide range of difficulties, I have a particular interest in anxiety, OCD and trauma

My goal is to provide a therapeutic environment that feels safe for the client to explore the factors that led them to seek therapy. I use an integrative approach combining person-centred therapy with CBT, attachment theory and psychodynamic elements. Psychotherapy offers a space to uncover the unknown and identify the blind spots, allowing us to gain clarity, and work through the barriers that keep us feeling stuck.

Taking the first step in deciding to attend therapy is often the hardest part, it can be difficult to admit to ourselves that we may need the intervention of another to assist us on this journey. Coming to speak allows an individual to be heard in way that is specific to them, a singular , and not to fit the specifics of ticking the boxes. Speaking about your way of experiencing life and it's difficulties and challenges, can free up a person and allow them to look through a different lens.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
