People often come to therapy when the ways they have used to manage emotional pain are no longer working, or have begun to affect their relationships, confidence, and ability to feel at ease with themselves, yet something keeps pulling them back into anxiety, low mood, grief, painful relationships, or emotional instability. I work with adults who want more than short-term reassurance: they want to understand the deeper roots of their difficulties and begin to restore psychological stability, emotional balance, and lasting change.

You promised you would not watch online porn or live sex cams again. You feel guilt and shame because you want to stop but cant. You visited a sex worker during lockdown and now you are worried you might have put the health of your family at risk. You plan to spend a short time on dating apps and find yourself spending hours on them, unable to put them down, feeling desperate and hopeless. You have an instant attraction when you meet a particular type of person, believing they are the one. You are in recovery for alcohol / drug addiction, but your compulsive sexual acting out behaviours have increased and you feel guilt and shame.

I'm Breda, the founder of and therapist behind Brí Counselling and Psychotherapy. I work from a pluralistic approach, recognising that there is no “one-size-fits-all” way of doing therapy. I believe counselling should be shaped around your individual needs, goals, and preferences, with collaboration at the heart of the work—working together to find what feels most helpful for you.
My practice draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), humanistic approaches such as Person-Centred Therapy and Choice Theory / Reality Therapy, as well as psychodynamic and attachment-based perspectives.

Have things been feeling heavier than they used to? Maybe you're constantly overthinking, struggling with anxiety, feeling stuck, or finding it difficult to cope with everything life is asking of you. You might look like you're managing on the outside while privately feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unsure where to turn.
Therapy offers a space where you don't have to face those struggles alone. My role isn't to judge or tell you what to do, but to understand your experience, help you make sense of what's happening, and support you in finding a way forward that feels right for you.

It can be hard to look through all the therapists and decide which one is best suited to you, so I will keep this short. I work with people facing stress, anxiety, and relationship challenges that often sit alongside addiction. My approach is supportive, practical, and focused on helping you understand patterns, build coping skills, and move toward lasting change

I use an integrative approach with tools to adapt to individual client needs. My commitment and awareness to my own journey in therapy led me into the area of mental health and helping others. I have over 20 years of experience working in the hospitality sector and have always valued working with people. I have experienced personal challenges, namely grief and my diagnosis of chronic health conditions. I am committed to utilising both my training and life experiences, by applying my knowledge and empathy to help others in their own journey.

It is often also a very rewarding and enriching experience leading to changes in one’s life that reduce distress and increase one’s ability to cope with difficulties and challenges. By it's nature the process involves engaging with uncomfortable aspects of oneself and our relationships that are challenging. The goal of the process is to increase self-knowledge, self-acceptance and self-compassion to enhance our capacity to relate to ourselves and others in healthier and more fulfilling ways.

My ideal clients are people who appear to be coping on the outside but feel anxious, overwhelmed, burnt out, disconnected or stuck internally. They may come to therapy because of stress, ADHD or neurodivergence, low confidence, grief, relationship strain, trauma, emotional regulation difficulties or repeating patterns they want to understand. I help by offering a calm, professional space to make sense of what is happening, identify what keeps them stuck, and build practical, realistic steps forward.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are accredited members of the main professional associations, mainly the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Most Psychologists are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement in Ireland, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Ireland. Psychologists have earned a doctoral degree in psychology and many are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a doctoral degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the IACP or ICP, they must complete a minimum of an NFQ Level 7 programme with 100 hours of clinical experience and a minimum of 450 hours of post-training clinical experience under clinical supervision.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in Ireland could cost between €50 – €90 when seeing a counsellor and €75 - €120 or more when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The National Counselling Service (NCS) is a government-funded service that provides short to medium term counselling and psychotherapy for free to individuals who have experienced trauma or abuse. The service can be accessed by GP referral or self-referral.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your eircode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the IACP, the ICP, or PSI are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others or when a child is in danger, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
