Hi, I’m Dean Byrne, a psychotherapist based in Portlaoise. As a younger therapist, I connect especially well with young adults navigating life’s challenges. I offer a warm, non-judgmental space where you can feel safe, heard, and supported. I’m trained as an integrative therapist, meaning I adapt to what works best for you. Having been through therapy myself, I understand how vulnerable it can feel to open up — and I truly respect that. I work both in-person and online, and many clients choose to stay long-term, reflecting the strength of the relationships we build.

Deciding to come for counselling can often be a difficult and drawn-out process. It is often also a very rewarding and enriching experience leading to changes in one’s life that reduce distress and increase one’s ability to cope with difficulties and challenges. By it's nature the process involves engaging with uncomfortable aspects of oneself and our relationships that are challenging. The goal of the process is to increase self-knowledge, self-acceptance and self-compassion to enhance our capacity to relate to ourselves and others in healthier and more fulfilling ways.

You promised you would not watch online porn or live sex cams again. You feel guilt and shame because you want to stop but cant. You visited a sex worker during lockdown and now you are worried you might have put the health of your family at risk. You plan to spend a short time on dating apps and find yourself spending hours on them, unable to put them down, feeling desperate and hopeless. You have an instant attraction when you meet a particular type of person, believing they are the one. You are in recovery for alcohol / drug addiction, but your compulsive sexual acting out behaviours have increased and you feel guilt and shame.

Navigating the complexities of life necessitates a profound understanding of the psychological factors that influence mental health. My role is to assist clients in identifying these underlying sources of their struggles. By fostering a relationship built on trust and mutual respect, I create a confidential environment where clients can freely express themselves without fear of judgment. This open dialogue is essential for recognizing the experiences that have shaped their journey and the challenges they currently face.

Well done! If your looking here, consider you have made a brave move towards reaching out for guidance and support. Whatever it is that's troubling you or leaving you stuck in life, always remember there is a solution for everything. Only you have the answers to be explored with my help. Life presents us with many challenges, more for some than others, the trick is to move through these and come out the other side. We learn from the lessons received through hardship and how we cope through them makes us stronger people. Perhaps you are wondering why choose to work with me or what would this look like? We can begin with exploring what you are going through and look to increase awareness and understanding of the impact of these lived experiences, and possibly identify the origins. Your journey and experiences are unique. You bring your story and together we will navigate the feelings, thoughts, emotions and behaviours, validate the impact and create a clear picture of the change you might hope to achieve. Through this process we can also explore ways you can best implement change for an improved lived experience.

I work with clients who wish to explore who they are and discover ways of living that are satisfying and meaningul to them. This involves mapping unconscious processes, drawing out internal tensions, and identifying unnecessary suffering with a view to actualising the fullness of oneself. I draw primarily from psychodynamic, pluralistic, and existential therapeutic modalities, emphasising depth and freedom. My practice is also influenced by dreamwork, literature, and meditation.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
