Anxiety Counselling in Thomastown

CBM Counselling & Psychotherapy
Psychotherapist, MA, MIACP
Thomastown, County Kilkenny R95
I really understand how debilitating anxiety and depression can be, that relationships break down and how mind boggling it is for a victim of narcissistic abuse or to subconsciously carry around Intergenerational Trauma or navigate your daily life if you are Neurodivergent.
Maybe you are someone who has tried with some success to deal with your own issues but have reached the threshold of your own ability and now need a counsellor you can build trust with. You like to be independent and looking for professional help is not something you do easily. So maybe Today is the day! Inside yourself you realize the importance of resolving what is happening in your life so you can finally move forwards. You feel it's time to talk to an experienced accredited counsellor who is empathetic, who will listen non-judgmentally and objectively and give you space so you can make the right decisions for yourself.

I work with clients who may be struggling with anxiety or trauma related to their relationships or family.
Let’s begin! Even if, at the moment, you are feeling a bit lost or stuck, is it possible that this could be an important turning point in your life? You do not need to do this alone. In difficult times, often the wisest thing to do, is to get professional advice. This fresh perspective from an objective person, with your best interests in mind, is my offer. Now you can do this from the comfort of your home by video call or alternatively you may come to see me in person.

I have 15 years experience working with adolescents, adults, and older adults from diverse backgrounds, supporting people through the issues that bring most of us to therapy at some point — anxiety, depression, complex trauma, grief and loss, addiction, and the relational patterns we find ourselves stuck in.
I offer sessions both face-to-face in Carlow and online with secure video. I bring particular focus to complex trauma, anxiety, and depression, three areas where patterns often run deep and where steady, careful work makes a real difference over time. I also work regularly with people navigating loss, addiction, relationship difficulties, stress and burnout.

Are you finding it difficult to cope or having problems in your relationships? Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by your emotions or you find yourself overthinking? Psychotherapy can help you connect with yourself, make sense of your experiences and find solutions. I believe that life is complex and no two people experience it the same way. Therefore therapy is not a 'one size fits all'. I draw on years of experience as a therapist and I integrate approaches so that the therapeutic space is centred on you and your needs.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
