Art Therapy can be helpful in expressing emotions.
I understand that reaching out for help requires significant courage. With this in mind, I offer a safe and confidential environment where we can collaboratively explore integrative and creative methods to transform thought patterns, foster personal growth, and develop lasting solutions to recurring challenges. My background includes working with individuals facing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, anger, trauma, abuse, grief, loss, and relationship difficulties, and I firmly believe that healing occurs in gradual, incremental steps.

My name is Jane Topkin and I am the founder of Healingmatters Counselling & Psychotherapy. The concept of my practice is based on the idea of the relationship with ourselves. We may endure many struggles in life and as humans, we are resilient and creative, however, we can never run away from ourselves. As many of our core issues perpetuate, they will not cease to show up until we face ourselves in the midst of our truth. Our relationships with others are also of crucial importance, being the reason why many people come to therapy in the first place.

My style of counselling is Integrative and Humanistic, allowing me to use art, movement, breathwork and talk therapy to support the client to explore issues arising in their life.
I work in a humanistic way incorporating the whole human, thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Sometimes we get stuck in life and need to talk, draw, breath or move in order to see the bigger picture. I work at the clients pace to assist in the work. Sometimes we just need someone to listen and the answers become clear.

Younger children might use non-directive play or art; while older children, teens, and adults can choose creative or talk-focused work, depending on what feels most comfortable.
I’m a fully accredited counsellor and psychotherapist specialising in children, adolescents, and adults, supporting issues such as anxiety, low mood, self-worth, trauma, navigating neurodiversity, and emotional dysregulation. My approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from EMDR, CBT, attachment theory, polyvagal principles, expressive arts, and relational psychotherapy. I work at your – or your child's – pace, creating a space that feels safe, grounded, and genuinely supportive. And I don't believe therapy needs to be heavy all the time; curiosity, creativity, and even laughter have an important place too.

Do you feel 'stuck' or overwhelmed by life's transitions? I work best with individuals who feel disconnected from themselves or weighed down by anxiety and persistent stress. Perhaps your usual coping mechanisms no longer feel like enough, and you’re looking for a safe, non-judgmental space to process the weight of burnout or complex relationship patterns. My ideal clients are ready to look beneath the surface and want a therapist who is both a compassionate listener and an active collaborator. Together, we will move from simply 'getting by' to living a life that feels authentic, empowered, and deeply aligned with who you truly are

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
