Seeking help during a challenging time can be difficult. Be confident that it is your inner strength that has guided you to reach out and seek support. In my experience, I have come to see that no issue is too big or too small; the difficulty comes in trying to overcome it alone. Allow me to provide a safe, confidential, supportive, non-judgemental space for you to talk about and explore the issues which you may be finding challenging or painful.

There are times in all our lives when we would benefit from some help and support. It can be difficult deciding who to see. With that in mind I offer all prospective clients an opportunity for us to meet face to face and discuss how I can help and for you to decide if I am the right person. I don’t charge for this and there is no assumption on my part that you will return, that would be your choice. I have extensive experience in many areas and am confident I can help you help yourself. Things can and do change for the better . . . there is light at the end of the tunnel. Individual sessions last 50mins and couples sessions 70mins.

Having 28yrs experience I will provide measurable tools to manage emotional crises right now. This is where DBT (Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation) provides the safety net. You need a balance of non-judgmental acceptance (radical acceptance of their current struggle) and firm, compassionate challenge (holding them accountable for behavioral change). You wish to understand how the skills learned in therapy connect to the spiritual and relational principles of 12-Step programs (e.g., acceptance, willingness, inventory work). To improve all areas of your life and relationships.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
