We live in very challenging times and sometimes need somewhere to talk, and someone to listen and care. To be heard can be truly transformational and healing for someone, so providing a non-judgmental, safe space is imperative for the work. I aim to provide support and care through your journey. I work holistically and I am a firm believer that the Body keeps the score. If we suppress how we truly feel, it can manifest in other ways in the body. Ideally, we want to operate from a centered place of truth, compassion and awareness, and I’m here to help you with that. I am also currently training to be a Polyvagal Theory Practitioner

I have extensive experience working with both individuals and couples on a wide range of issues from relationship difficulties, anxiety, stress, panic attacks, depression and loss and grief.
The core philosophy of my practice comes from my training in Gestalt Psychotherapy. It is the integrity, the oneness of mind, spirit and body and importantly our environment. At the core of Gestalt Therapy is the holistic view that people are intricately linked to and influenced by their environments and that all people strive toward growth and balance

I work in an integrative manner which means that I have a range of different skills, theories and techniques to draw on and I use these to tailor the therapy to each individual client to help those dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression and inter-personal relationships.
Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and it can be hard to know who to talk to, and what to say. Does this feel familiar to you? My main aim is to listen with empathy and to form a deep relationship within which healing can occur. I will endeavour to understand so that you feel heard and will create a safe space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences fully.

I specialise in dealing with anxiety, stress, depression and mens health issues.
My main objective is originally to gain an understanding of the presenting concerns and from there to probe more into how this impacts our day to day life. Probing creates a better understanding (for both of us). Alongside this, I incorporate CBT to implement strategies to deal with the presenting concerns and begin working to address the concerns directly.

I work with adults who are often functioning well on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, stuck in their thoughts, or under constant pressure. Many come to therapy feeling “on edge”, mentally exhausted, or caught in patterns they can’t seem to change. Some have a clear difficulty, while others feel things are more complex or harder to put into words.

I believe in the effectiveness of brief intervention. As well as being emotionally supportive, therapy can be educational and empowering. During just a few sessions, clients discover much about themselves and gain perspective on their thoughts and behaviour. Through their experience of navigating issues brought to therapy, clients become better prepared to deal with difficulties in the future. I focus on listening to and understanding my clients, helping them through their issues, and nurturing the strength and confidence they need to become independent again. To learn more about me, please check my website: www.galwaytherapist.ie

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
