I believe in the effectiveness of brief intervention. As well as being emotionally supportive, therapy can be educational and empowering. During just a few sessions, clients discover much about themselves and gain perspective on their thoughts and behaviour. Through their experience of navigating issues brought to therapy, clients become better prepared to deal with difficulties in the future. I focus on listening to and understanding my clients, helping them through their issues, and nurturing the strength and confidence they need to become independent again. To learn more about me, please check my website: www.galwaytherapist.ie

People often come to see me because they’re struggling in their relationships, dealing with anxiety or low mood, feeling stuck or dissatisfied, or finding it hard to make decisions or set boundaries. I regularly work with people who describe difficulty saying no, 'people pleasing', worrying about being 'too much' or 'not enough,' feeling invisible or resentful (but not saying anything about it), or replaying interactions and criticising themselves afterwards.

As a psychotherapist, I can work with a client who is seeking personal growth and emotional healing. They may struggle with issues like anxiety, depression, or unresolved trauma, but they have a deep desire for self-awareness and positive change. Their needs include emotional safety, support, and tools to navigate their challenges. Their goals often centre around finding balance, improving their relationships, and building resilience. They want to understand themselves better and develop coping strategies to lead a more fulfilling life, motivated by the desire to break free from patterns that no longer serve them.

My ideal client is someone who may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, grief, or navigating a significant life transition. They might also be exploring their identity, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community, or learning to embrace their neurodivergence. At the heart of their struggle is a desire for understanding, acceptance, and clarity. Their goals often include building resilience, feeling more at ease in their daily lives, and developing healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. What they want most is to be truly heard and supported in a safe, non-judgemental space.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, stressed and unable to focus? Feeling worried, struggling with the world today. Recovery is possible - I use Trauma Informed Care, EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I focus on working with clients struggling with Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Trauma and Unresolved Childhood Issues. When I first meet with a client, we discuss what has brought them to therapy. Why do we go to therapy?  People go to therapy to cope with life's challenges, manage mental health conditions, and improve their overall well-being. Reasons include dealing with trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, and depression, as well as working through grief, stress, and life transitions. Therapy can also be used for personal growth, helping people understand themselves better and develop skills to handle future issues.

I work empathically with my clients. Sessions are completely confidential. I work very well with clients who suffer from anxiety and depression. My speciality is my inner child work. This is a very powerful therapy. I can bring the client back in a safe way to a traumatic experience. Sometimes, I will combine this therapy with music. The client may experience the trauma through feelings in the body, this therapy answers for the client why they feel the way they do in their body. By unlocking those feelings healing may begin. It can help a client to become more confident and as a result they begin to uncover their true self's.

My past clients have attended because of anxiety and/or depression, substance abuse, and relationship issues. The overwhelming correlation between my clients is their low sense of self, of self-worth. They describe the effects of the low self-worth on their relationship, personal and in work, and how they try to cope but never succeed, often resorting to substances which worsen their situation.

Parakletos is an ancient Greek word meaning Advocate or Helper. In my practice, it represents the therapeutic relationship—a space where you are supported, understood, and guided toward healing and self-discovery. I aim to provide a compassionate space to explore mind, body and spirit, helping you find clarity and strength in your journey. During June, July and August, I will not be seeing new clients. I will have a new schedule beginning in September. Please feel free to contact me regarding availability in September.

As a therapist with a Master’s in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) I work with individuals who often feel overwhelmed by anxiety, low self-esteem, or self-doubt—even if on the outside, they seem to have it all together. You might find yourself overthinking, putting pressure on yourself to be perfect, or feeling like you’re never quite “enough.” Sometimes, you’re not sure where these feelings come from. You may sense that old patterns, irrational thoughts, or unconscious beliefs are quietly shaping the way you see yourself and the world. You want to break free from that cycle, to feel more connected, confident, and calm.

My name is Gearóid and I'm a therapist based in Sligo. I really love being a therapist, and I love to work with people at a crossroads in their lives. Perhaps questioning identity, navigating relationships, adjusting to a life transitions or stuck with a creative block. I love to work with people seeking space to talk openly without judgment. Perhaps they want clarity, self-acceptance, and a sense of direction, knowing they can get to that point through collaboration. Often feeling stuck or disconnected, I work with clients looking for support to better understand themselves and move forward with confidence and purpose.

Contact Via WhatsApp/Email. My focuses are relationships, eating disorders, & addiction. In both our relationships with self and others, most long to experience love, belonging & growth. In relationships and in hardships, I see infinite potential for transformation and evolution: through the stuck places, the old patterns, the failed attempts to connect or feel safe. Underneath, the true you is waiting to be heard through the surface ‘symptoms’. If you can recognise where you’re at, you’re halfway there — and rather than just treating the symptoms, together we listen to what’s underneath, and help you to get free from the root.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
