Hi, I am very much a Person-Centred / Humanistic Counsellor who allows the client to explore their issues and find their own way forward. I believe that sometimes we just need to stop and breath and allow ourselves the space to explore what’s next for us. I understand that counselling is not a 'one size fits all' process so I work on an integrated basis with the client to explore the therapies that will work for them. I have a special interest in bereavement as I have been working with clients who have lost loved ones during the Covid-19 pandemic. My own history of loss has helped me a great deal in this area.

Alan’s approach is integrative, drawing on many useful techniques and approaches; however, places greater value on the therapeutic relationship for healing as he does not believe in the notion of fixing. As no one comes to ‘be’ in isolation, Alan also appreciates the systemic lens of familial relations and respects how that influences all relationships. We all have stories we tell ourselves and therapy can be a safe place to explore if these are helping or harming you in relation to your self or others. A tenet in Narrative Therapy:‘the person is not the problem; the problem is the problem’ (White & Epston).

“I provide an opportunity for people to share how they are feeling within a safe, empathic, and non-judgemental environment. I use my skills, education, and training, together with my life experience to support clients within my practice. I work with clients presenting with a variety of issues including loss and grief, critical illness, loss of meaning in life, relationship issues, mother-daughter difficulties, complex trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, women’s reproductive issues and many others. As therapy progresses, I often find that presenting issues change as the relationship unfolds, and this too can be part of the process".

I work with clients from an integrative, client centred approach, making sure their needs are heard and I believe that the relationship between therapist and client is where healing begins. Depending on the needs of the client I may draw on a number of approaches and can work with CBT principles, pyscho-education and nervous system regulation techniques.

I help people become more present, open, and engaged in their lives. This involves thinking and feeling with greater flexibility, allowing you to notice what’s truly happening in the moment instead of getting stuck in old patterns. It’s about moving toward what genuinely matters to you—developing habits and making choices that align with your values, rather than simply reacting to stress or discomfort.
Therapy isn’t about avoiding pain; it's about learning to confront it in a way that fosters growth. Instead of feeling trapped or held back by difficult emotions, you can learn to work with them, so they no longer control your life.

What should I expect from rational emotive behaviour therapy?
The therapist will work with the individual to recognise rigid thought patterns that sabotage goals and set them back. The objective is to identify, challenge and reframe negative thoughts and enable an individual to understand that they possess control over their emotions and their behaviour. This therapy often emphasises the use of reasoning and self-direction.
Is rational emotive behaviour therapy effective?
Rational emotive behaviour therapy is evidence-based and is highly effective. It helps a person reframe self-defeating or catastrophising thoughts thoughts and gives them tools to approach a range of circumstances they may encounter post-therapy as well. REBT can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
When do I know if I need treatment with rational emotive behaviour therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with rigid, unreasonable thoughts that dwell in negativity, they may feel stuck. A rational emotive behaviour therapist can help a person examine and change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour. This concise and concrete therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
How long does rational emotive behaviour therapy last?
REBT therapy treatment is short-term and focused in nature. It can last for a set number of sessions, ending within a few weeks or months. Like any type of therapy, however, sessions depend on the individual, as well as the severity of their condition or problem. The individual may wish to ask the therapist about typical progress and how long they expect treatment to take.
