Clients come to counselling when their normal coping mechanisms are no longer working for them and they are feeling overwhelmed, confused and afraid. It may be due to anxiety in their life, stress in work or relationships, low self esteem or depression . They come looking for clarity, a sense of understanding that they are not alone in what they are feeling and perhaps for practical techniques to manage the conflicting emotions. They also want to be really listened to and not to be judged as they tell their story.

I never take for granted the fact that clients who come to counselling are at their most vulnerable. For those who are struggling with issues like depression , anxiety, abuse, both physical or mental, anxiety, relationship or sexuality and gender issues, my role in the first place is to listen and to provide a safe and confidential place for my clients to make sense of their experiences. Research has shown that the relationship between therapist and client is very important to the outcome of therapy, so I always check with my clients if they feel what we are doing in our sessions are working for them.

If you find it difficult to cope, suffer from stress, panic, fear, anxiety, depression or emotional difficulties. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help. Are you your own harshest critic, feeling not good enough, feeling stuck, lost or comparing yourself to others? Does this impact your mood or behavior? Counselling can help you to feel better about yourself and feel more connected, by making changes to uncover your strengths. It can be a space to talk about distressing experiences, to help you deal constructively with your difficulties and overcome obstacles to help you heal and grow on a journey to self discovery.

I work with a variety of clients who are overwhelmed withnissues affecting them and who feel that they are unable to cope, or that the could cope better if they could find a way of dealing with things. Using the human givens framework helps us to look at all the things affecting them, and by understanding them and their consequences more, find new ways of getting their emotional needs met. By engaging with people in a compassionate and non judgemental way, together we can find strengths and resources that help us overcome the challenges that we have.

Depression Counsellors
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy by depression counsellors in Skerries. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
