Sandra strives to create a therapeutic environment grounded in empathy while clients embark on their journey of self-exploration and personal growth. Her approach to psychotherapy is rooted in the integration of person-centred and psychoanalytic approaches. She is mindful that each client is unique and tailors her therapeutic approach accordingly by incorporating, for example, CBT, Schema therapy and somatic techniques. So often with symptoms of anxiety and depression, vagus nerve dysregulation is an unseen enemy and Sandra uses the principles of polyvagal theory to help clients become more grounded and centred in the body.

I work a lot with BPD, OCD, and anxiety disorders but anyone in distress, crisis, burnout, or with a dilemma will benefit.
I help individuals with communication in relationships and sexual issues. My clinical specialities are depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I also work with trauma, crisis, and childhood abuse, and loss and bereavement. Overwhelming emotion and anger management are also areas where I can be of help. If you have psychiatric diagnoses I can liaise with your team. I can help with CBT, DBT, Schema Therapy and help with coping skills. Personal development skills may be assertiveness, boundaries, and working on self-esteem and meaning in life issues. I'm particularly interested in helping adults who don't feel grown up to mature.

My broad range of experience includes working with psychiatric diagnoses such as psychosis and borderline personalities and with those affected by anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, relationship difficulties, bereavement and traumatic and post traumatic disorders.
I aim to offer support through my psychoanalytic practice to Italian speakers who live in Ireland. I expect much of my work will hold and contain their feelings of loss at being away from home, as well as the fear of disintegration brought about by the hard task that living in a country with a different culture and language may bring up.

You've taken the first step by seeking help in what could be the most important journey of your life. It can be nerve-racking thinking about sitting in front of a stranger and telling them about yourself. What if they judge you? What if they don't believe you? What if it doesn't work? These are common fears, and I've had them myself when I first started therapy. When we work together, our relationship will be one built on trust, confidentiality, and without judgment.

Feeling stuck in repetitive patterns? Overwhelmed, burnt out, and stressed? These cycles can stem from unconscious processes, like repetition compulsion, where past experiences influence present behaviours without our awareness. Understanding these patterns is the first step toward change. In therapy, I offer a safe, empathetic, and non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and behaviours. Together, we'll enhance self-awareness, develop healthier habits, and uncover your best self.

I am an experienced Chartered Counselling Psychologist who works with adults struggling with a range of issues, including feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred, relationship difficulties, depression and apathy, anxiety and avoidance. I also have a particular interest in helping people who have suffered abuse, trauma or systemic oppression to relieve themselves of self-blame and start to heal and feel strong and in control again. I fundamentally believe that people's intense distress and troubling symptoms are not a sign of deficiency or disorder, but a reasonable and understandable response to what they have been through.

I am a qualified psychotherapist and completed my training with IICP college in Tallaght. This marked a significant shift in my career, having spent many years working in product transfer, as an analytical chemist in the pharmaceutical industry. The methodical aspect of this work has benefitted my practice as a therapist, as I always pay close attention to detail and take note of the unremarkable. My journey into therapy so far has been aided by this analytical curiosity about myself and others and my personal experience in the client’s chair.

I work from a humanistic-integrative perspective in which, depending on the needs of the client, I draw on a number of complementary approaches. The way that psychotherapy works is different for each individual. I strongly believe that each person is on a unique journey; therefore, they need a way of working that aligns to this very personal factor. Moreover, even during your individual journey, your therapeutic needs will be continuously evolving because every day we can feel differently and, in simple terms, what we need changes accordingly.

Borderline Personality (BPD) Counsellors

What is the most successful approach to treating borderline personality disorder?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for borderline personality disorder. An evidence-based treatment, it addresses the extreme emotional reactivity, the relationship difficulties, and the acts of self-harm that create so much distress for BPD patients. DBT is a comprehensive program that includes both regular individual psychotherapy sessions and weekly group sessions of skills training.

What happens in treatment of borderline personality disorder?

Treatment typically consists of weekly individual therapy sessions that last an hour and group skill-focused instructional sessions that may last up to two hours. Patients are typically given homework “assignments” in which they are asked to practice in their daily life the skills they acquire in therapy. Patients also keep a diary tracking their emotions and impulses as a way to know which situations are most problematic and to help them gain control over their own behavior. Difficult situations and feelings are typically reviewed in therapy sessions and more constructive solutions found.

What kinds of problems does BPD treatment help with?

DBT was initially developed to dampen the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients. It is now the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, a serious condition marked by extreme emotional reactivity, relationship instability, and self-injurious behaviors. Treatment of BPD helps patients tolerate the flux of emotions without acting on them, often with a specific focus on tolerating negative emotions. DBT addresses the core problems of BPD—fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and impulsivity.

What is the goal of treatment in borderline personality disorder?

The goal of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is to relieve the extreme emotional distress that patients experience—to curb their emotional reactivity, to minimize their inclination to self-harm, and to reduce their impulsivity. Toward these ends, patients are not only taught an array of new coping skills and techniques for emotional regulation, they are given opportunities to practice them. Another major goal of treatment is interpersonal effectiveness; patients learn and problem-solve ways to effectively communicate in relationships, especially how to ask for what they need as a way to minimize hurt feelings.
