I often use mindfulness based CBT's in my practice.
Hi, I'm Keelin, a qualified psychologist and life coach. When I'm not in sessions, you'll find me swimming or going for walks with my beloved dog, Artie. When I started my career as a newly-graduated psychologist back in 2013, I soon discovered that most of my clients were expressing a significant degree of dissatisfaction in life; anxiety, stress and low self-worth were widespread. I strongly related to their struggles because I was experiencing similar myself. After a decade of engaging in my own healing, I discovered ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) and fell in love with it.

I am a qualified, accredited therapist working in North Dublin. Originally from England, I have lived in Dublin since 2006, raising my family here. I started my training in South Dublin in 2012, and my passion has taken me to research and develop a deep interest and understanding of Attachment. I believe having this understanding enhances my work with depression, anxiety, bereavement and grief, trauma and parent-adolescent work, in addition to the therapist-client relationship. It is also important for me to use my skills in other areas of my life and, as such I work have lectured at IICP and was a director with Empowerment Plus.

Mindfulness based psychotherapy offers a non-judgemental exploration of feelings, thoughts and perceptions in present moment, and allows a reflection on what may no longer be helpful.
Being able to tolerate our actual experience without having to get rid of anything can become a path to acceptance and the possibility of change. This is a gentle and holistic approach and the intention is to offer a supportive and compassionate space where you can feel safe to explore what is happening for you.

I initially begin with person-centred therapy, followed by CBT, psychoanalysis, or mindfulness-based approaches, based on the need of the client.
Life challenges and mental health issues can be exacerbated by feelings of shame, invalidation, and isolation. The first step toward addressing that feeling is talking it out. I provide counselling and psychotherapy sessions with a humanistic, integrative approach, taking the time to respect the individuality of each client and create a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space. Well done on taking the first step and for reaching out. I welcome the opportunity to encourage and empower you on your therapeutic journey and personal growth.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
