My name is Lisa Gallagher. I am an accredited psychotherapist practising online and also in person in D15. I work with adults, children, teens and couples. I have always believed in the resilience of the human spirit and I trust in everyone’s potential to create a balance of autonomy and interconnection in order to contend with life’s challenges. I have worked with the full range of human experience, however grief and trauma have become areas of particular importance. I feel honoured to sit with people in these intense emotional experiences and to help them feel less alone and overwhelmed by their pain.

I work within a humanistic, Integrative approach, including approaches such as CBT and Existential Psychotherapy. I believe in the client guiding where each session goes and gaining autonomy and confidence in what they need and want to focus on in therapy, as time goes on. As the therapist, I work in a collaborative way alongside the client and help them to explore, what in their lives and relationships might be troubling them, including the relationship we have with ourselves. I believe that each person can tap into an inner self that guides and protects them and that each person has the resilience within them to face any struggle.

Counselling and psychotherapy focus on relieving the burden of mental health difficulties, where healing and discovering occurs through talking. Through talk therapy, we can find a new perspective on life, gain awareness and balance, and carry changes that may have been difficult to implement in the past. I truly believe in the healing power of telling our own story in a safe, emphatic and non-judgmental space.

You may be living with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or a sense of disconnection from yourself. Perhaps you notice repeating patterns rooted in earlier life experiences or childhood trauma, and you’re seeking a deeper understanding of what’s beneath them. You want therapy to feel safe, steady, and meaningful- not rushed or surface-level, so you can develop greater self-compassion, emotional regulation, and a stronger connection to who you truly are.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
