ANXIETY, STRESS, OVERWHELM, PANIC. If you have difficulty with any of these or related issues such as
insomnia
, fears and phobias such as fear of public speaking, social anxiety, ocd, impulsiveness, or anger, maybe I can help. Do you have difficulty with emotion regulation, concentrating, staying present, do you sometimes wish you could relax, focus, be fully present, and engaged? Again, if so, maybe I can help. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is the "go to", best evidenced therapy for anxiety. Compassion-Focused approaches also have sound evidence backing them up and in my experience can be invaluable in the process of therapy.

I specialize in the areas of anxiety, panic attacks, stress,
sleep
difficulties and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
I am a Chartered Psychologist of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), Psychology lecturer, therapist and published author. Every person is uniquely perfectly imperfect. I work with clients as individuals and take into account what matters most to them. I support them in building skills and living a life in the direction of their deepest values. We can't always prevent life's challenges from occurring but we can change how we respond to the thoughts and feelings that arise when things get difficult. I only use evidence-based interventions.

Please note that I am on maternity leave from December 2022 where I have not set my return-to-work date in mid/late 2023. I guide and support people on a journey of self discovery and self acceptance so that they can develop a better relationship with themselves. I offer a safe container for people to be seen and heard as they begin to reclaim and re–emerge as their true selves. A space to be you. Each person's story and journey is unique where I don’t believe in a “one size fits all”. Therefore I use different therapeutic approaches collaboratively with you to explore what best suits your needs.

I work with both adults and adolescents and provide a type of listening that is singular to each person (not a one answer fits all model). By attending therapy you release yourself of burdens and concerns and ongoing symptoms and find new ways of looking at life. The work I facilitate provides an insight and outlook that is focused towards helping each person find more understanding of themselves and what they want for themselves. My experience includes people with different psychiatric diagnosis, people experiencing grief, loss, addiction, ruminating and obsessive thoughts, pre and post natal depression and eating disorders.

From my perspective, psychotherapy means healing. It is the opening, where individuals begin to experience a more full contact with themselves and the outside world. I help them understand their emotions that signpost their needs. I help them to discover their unfulfilled needs and, together, we look for obstacles and barriers that could prevent people from fully enjoying their lives. One step at a time, they become increasingly ready to lead their lives consciously. They begin to authentically live, rather than continue, their lives.

With the wide skill set of an Integrative Therapist, I find that organically, talking therapy and body based therapies harmonise in the therapy room where clients get to talk, to name emotions, to feel them emotionally and to break down their physicality, demystifying responses, such as anxiety, and aiding the regaining of personal autonomy and full participation in life. Some clients are top down, and others are bottom up, and recognising this in how I work with each individual client is essential.

The Human Givens approach is a gentle, solution-focused, brief therapy which helps individuals find a solution to get their emotional needs met by using the resources they already have. By working together with my clients we can find ways for them to feel better after just one session. I work holistically, using the latest research from Neuroscience, Wisdom traditions, relaxation techniques, guided imagery and the wonderful resources my client already has. Together we can set a goal for therapy and work towards meeting that goal by creating achievable tasks between sessions. The therapy sessions last between 75-90 minutes.

I work with a variety of clients who are overwhelmed withnissues affecting them and who feel that they are unable to cope, or that the could cope better if they could find a way of dealing with things. Using the human givens framework helps us to look at all the things affecting them, and by understanding them and their consequences more, find new ways of getting their emotional needs met. By engaging with people in a compassionate and non judgemental way, together we can find strengths and resources that help us overcome the challenges that we have.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
