Difficulties and distress can arise in anyone’s life at any time. Even with the support of family and friends, it may still be difficult to cope and function effectively. Sometimes, it may be easier to talk about personal, family or relationship issues with an independent person. Even without being in crisis, or on the verge of one, underlying feelings of dissatisfaction with life in general may still be experienced. This may also involve profiling and assessment to assist the therapeutic care plan. The Phoenix Centre can help you with these issues in a friendly, professional and confidential environment. www.phoenixcentre.ie

Feeling low, anxious, over-analyzing, being detached, feeling lost, feeling guilty, having a strong critical voice, having relationship problems, being told you are over-sensitive-these are all issues we can look at in-depth. You may have a diagnosis but it is usually much more helpful to look at a formulation or map of your difficulties. I am passionate about working with people who want to really understand what is contributing to their difficulties, and want to engage in experiential work to deeply address these. I specialise in Schema Therapy as it not only seeks to bring deep understanding, but also deep healing.

“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” Carl Rogers. The world we live in is constantly challenging, particularly if we are already feeling stressed or anxious. This stress can lead to lasting feelings of sadness, anxiety or depression. But this does not have to be the case. We all have within us the ability to live a more fulfilled and happier life. A good therapist helps realise this potential by facilitating self-discovery and acceptance and using this for emotional growth.

Sometimes in life you need a place to explore the difficulties that arise. Either behaviours, feelings or emotions. At times you need to be listened to confidentially and without judgement. What troubles our minds can have such a negative impact on the quality of our lives. Psychological troubles come in many forms, relational both to oneself and to others, grief and loss, behavioural problems from anxiety or depression and rage or sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what it is, only a sense that things are not right. The first brave step to take is to share that difficulty.

Clive works with people experiencing a range of symptoms, particularly Depersonalisation and Derealisation. He works in an individual way to meet the needs of a person, focusing on what is brought to find the underlying cause of the issue. “I work with what is known to find what is unknown to the individual. If you are finding life difficult, it's okay; we will find a way to the root of the symptoms. Being listened to and truly heard by a qualified psychotherapist can bring change and restoration to a person.

Welcome to Your Therapeutic Journey Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting, and for many, it may bring a sense of vulnerability or uncertainty. It's completely normal to feel this way, and I want you to know that you're not alone. It takes courage to seek support, and that courage is the foundation of your healing journey. My core belief is that each individual has the potential to lead a more fulfilled life. Too often, we get caught in cycles of guilt, shame, and self-criticism that prevent us from investing in ourselves, our well-being, and our happiness. But therapy is not just a tool for healing – it’s a power

My ideal client is the one who is looking to make positive changes in their life. This person would understand that nothing is ever fixed but it is managed and they would be okay with taking the steps necessary to learn their management skills. I would like to be the guide for that life transformation.

Personality Disorders Counsellors

What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?

Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.

When to seek treatment for personality disorders?

Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.

How long does therapy take for personality disorders?

The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specialises in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.

Can therapy help people with personality disorders?

Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
