When something in your life is not how you'd like it to be, or when you're looking for help and support for something that you're going through; perhaps a life event, a particular concern or maybe problems with relationships, at home, in school or at work. Maybe you are experiencing feelings of anxiety, frustration, fear, sadness or other emotions. Stress can be a part of this. Counselling can help you to better understand what might be going on for you, and to find ways to effectively manage feelings, thoughts or worries. My experience is that clients come to counselling because they want something in their life to be different.

I work with clients as individuals and take into account what matters most to them. I support them in building skills and living a life in the direction of their deepest values. We can't always prevent life's challenges from occurring but we can change how we respond to the thoughts and feelings that arise when things get difficult. I only use evidence-based interventions.

Why can't I work this out? Will it never go away? How did I get into this? Having questions about our life is normal. The art is answering them. Sometimes life presents its own solutions. Sometimes no mater what we do we just can't make the problem go away. That is where counselling comes in. The professional relationship of counselling provides the opportunity to objectively explore issues. At Prevail, I James Foley, strive to establish a relationship that creates a safe space where you can offload, challenge yourself and hopefully initiate change on the concerns that hold you. My approach to treatment is very much guided by the person who walks through the door. I do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all form of therapy and the direction the treatment will take will be informed by the relationship between therapist and client. I use an integrative approach that involves humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive therapy; whatever I feel best suits the individual client’s needs. While in session, I try to create a safe and non-judgemental space where my clients can explore what is going on for them in the moment. We then work together to make the changes they wish to see in their lives.

My approach is humanistic and integrative, meaning that I combine learning from different schools of psychotherapy to best meet the needs of each person. I work with a broad range of issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, childhood trauma, self-esteem and personal-development. My career began in software development, and I moved from there into the not-for-profit sector, where I supported people in developing leadership skills through volunteering. I became interested in counselling and psychotherapy, as I saw people's ability to grow during periods of intense challenge, provided they had the right supports.

The client who is motivated to engage with the work of therapy is my ideal client, whether it is in Individual Therapy or Group Therapy. I meet with a new client for a number of sessions so that we can decide together what might be the most beneficial form of therapy. From there, the client usually agrees to make a commitment to meeting regularly, giving themselves the time it takes to begin the know and understand their emotional issues.

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
